  • The Unity of Destruction and Construction by Wang ZHAN 展望

The Unity of Destruction and Construction

    Wang ZHAN 展望

    LIU Jiao-Chun

Liu Xiaochun's critique, published on "Art Currents," issue 1, 1995, of the group show "Sculpture 1994" featured five sculptors. Zhan Wang was one of them. The authors discussed Zhan Wang's work " Temptation," made of clothes, linen and glue, and examined the aesthetics and philosophical thought contained within. The author considers this show as the result of the destruction and reconstruction of classical sculpture, which is then combined with Avant-Garde sculpture. In Zhan Wang’s case, the contorted garments embodies his classical sculpture education but the language he used, the message to convey, is reconstructed into Avant-Garde sculpture. (Zhuocheng Jiang '26)

  • Proposal Art: Kala Chorus 卡拉大合唱 by Shuang-Gui YE 叶双贵

    Proposal Art: Kala Chorus 卡拉大合唱

    Shuang-Gui YE 叶双贵

This proposal art manifests the artist's concern for human-nature relations. The idea is that five robots will imitate humans to urinate in the pond where fish, shrimp, and ducks live. Animals will be agonized by the toxic water and beat the water. The sound of beating water will trigger robots to chorus "Tomorrow will be better" in different languages. At the end, animals will die in the toxic environment, which creates an ironic contrast between the chorus and the fact that animals are dying. (Zhuocheng Jiang '26)

  • "Bird Trap" design sketch "捕鸟器"设计草图 by Wang ZHAN 展望

    "Bird Trap" design sketch "捕鸟器"设计草图

    Wang ZHAN 展望

    ZHAN Wang

The inspiration of "Bird Trap" is from the artist's childhood experience of bird catching. Instead of bird food, ZHAN Wang put books about Ornithology that symbolizes “culture” underneath the bird trap. According to the artist, “culture” brings humans wisdom and emotions, but it is also a metaphysical deception. A bird was placed on the other side of the string outside of the trap, where a person is supposedly at. The angle between the bird trap and the ground was intentionally designed to be 45-degrees, which creates a sense of balance that neither humans nor animals can break through.
