This essay, titled "A Brief Discussion on Recent Action Art in Mainland China, by Li Xianting, a celebrated art critic, published on "Ming Pao Monthly," Hong Kong, 1995, issue 11, introduces the origin and main features of Contemporary Chinese Art in mainland China, including important events like the "China/Avant-Garde" exhibition in Beijing in 1989. Action arts like "12 Square Meters" and "65 kg" by Zhang Huan, in addition ones by Ma Liuming and Xu Bing, are discussed in this essay, which emphasizes that a strong sense of social criticism becomes a fundamental feature of the action art in mainland China in the early 1990s.
