    This proposal was handwritten by the artist in Chinese and was served as a response to the newspaper article “Retrofitting the Forbidden City Moat (改造筒子河)”, which was published by the "Beijing Youth Weekly" on June 6th, 1996. The artist provides a solution to the topic of “retrofitting” by giving detailed instructions on washing the Forbidden City moat. Two graphs were drawn to help with the artistic illustration.     This proposal is written in response to the newspaper article “China will Resume its Exercise of Sovereignty over Hong Kong on July 1st, 1997 (中国将于1997年7月1日对香港恢复行使主权)”, which was published on Beijing Daily on December 5th, 1995. The artist illustrates his idea on how to arrange the exhibition room and what documents are planned to be “washed” on this proposal. (Yifan Shang ‘25)

    This proposal consists of photographs and hand-written notes that indicate the arrangement of the exhibition “The Nutritious Soil”, which was held in Frankfurt, German in 1996. Nearly one ton of nutritious soil and some photographs of the artist’s father planting flowers were brought to the exhibition from China. The term “Nutritious Soil” refers to a type of highly-quality soil found in the Changbai mountains in Northeast China. The idea is that this soil “contains many nutrients and will enhance the natural environment in other places”. As it states in the proposal, “the nutritious soil and the coffee house are both nutritious to anyone who comes. Art is nutritious to people and people can give nutritious to art as well”.     Yang Ke Qin was born in Xinjiang, China in 1963. She graduated from the Xinjiang Normal University Department of Fine Arts in 1985, with a degree in oil painting. In 1993, Yang graduated from the Oil Painting Department of the Central academy of Fine arts and won the Excellence Prize given by the Oil Painting Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts. She has won various awards and her work has been showcased across prestigious exhibitions such as the 1st Biennial Exhibition of Chinese Oil Painting for her work 'Locks" (1993), the Exhibition of One Hundred Contemporary Chinese Young Painters for her work "Truth" (1993), the 8th National Exhibition of Fine Arts for her work "Holiday, "Women's Approach to Chinese Contemporary Art" for the work "Water pipes, No. 3" (1995), and Exhibition of Chinese Women Artists for the work "Water pipes, no. 7" (1995). She has also had several solo exhibitions. In 1995, Yang held a modern art exhibition at the Chinese Fine Art Center called "A Story of Two and a Half Weeks". In the invitation to the exhibit Yang provided a Words of the Artist section in which she said: "The question, "What is art?" is, for me, as complicated as the question "What is woman?" The definitions of truth will be widely varied. I believe. Why not turn the question "What is not art"? My creation is based on the quest for "What is not?", as I think I can understand what art is in the quest for what art is not. And this "being" finds itself in the true self." (Nicole Wang '26)
