Resume: Wang Luyan
Lu-Yan Wang 王鲁炎
Wang Luyan
This paper is divided into two parts. The left side is Wang Luyan’s resume and there is a photo printed in balck and white on the right side of the paper. The photograph shows Wang Luyan's work at "New Asian Art Show (China, Japan and Korea)" in 1995, which depicts three real bicycles placed on the exhibition floor with a sketch design of the bicycle hanging in the background. The idea is that as people ride the bike forward, the bike itself will actually go backward. The artist is possibly trying to convey the paradox on the function of the bicycle: one bike can be ridden on the street, it can be used as a crutch for the disabled, it can also be seen as a tool for weightlifting in people’s lives. Thus, the bicycle goes beyond the function of just being a bicycle. It represents a new cultural phenomenon in contemporary Chinese culture, which is a realization of the functional transformation on the use of bicycles. (Yifan Shang ‘25)
