Description

Free Speech Puzzle is porcelain artwork created by Ai Weiwei in 2014. This work consists of 32 individually shaped porcelain pieces that together form the map of China. Each piece is decorated with floral patterns resembling traditional Qing dynasty porcelain and inscribed with the Chinese “言论自由”, meaning “Free Speech.” Another related work included in the additional file, Free Speech Pendant (2014), is a small rectangular porcelain decorated with similar floral patterns, with the English words “Free Speech” written in the center. The pendant was created as a limited edition for the Vancouver Art Gallery. By incorporating the concept of free speech into Chinese traditional porcelain designs, Ai connects Chinese cultural traditions with contemporary political and social issues.
