Description

Inspired by Marcel Duchamp’s concept of the “readymade,” Ai Weiwei incorporated what he called a “cultural readymade”: a common earthenware vessel dating to the Han dynasty (206 BCE–220 CE) emblazoned with a Coca-Cola logo. This apparent mistreatment of a valuable cultural relic functions as an emblematic collision between Chinese traditional culture and an American symbol of commercialism. In doing so, the work raises questions about how cultures appropriate one another and how cultural value is constituted. (Zhuocheng Jiang '26)
