Description
The painting "Sound of the Empty Valley" suggests echoes in a quiet mountain valley. The work draws from Fan Kuan’s "Travelers Among Mountains and Streams" in the Northern Song Dynasty. It uses a vertical scroll format to represent a towering mountain. Additionally, the artist employs the same technique of negative space to create the mountain form and the surrounding space. Unlike Fan Kuan, who emphasizes the experience of travel and viewing, this work focuses more on the mountain’s structure and spatial relationship. Through layers of ink brushstrokes rising upward, the artist strengthens the sense that the slope grows from the ground and lifts upward. For the mountain itself, the layered brushwork moves to the right, which emphasizes the steepness and height of the form. Overall, the still and open surroundings work together with the directional movement in the image, creating a quiet space with a resonant atmosphere.
