Description
At the center of the composition, two lotus pods are rendered with their stems intertwined, and are placed on a Chinese traditional “baxian zhuo,” old fashioned square table to seat eight people. Curtains with grape and leaf patterns are depicted at the top, left, and right edge of this painting. According to the artist, “what people can see is only an illusion, what is covered up can most likely tell the truth. (http://www.99ys.com/home/1970/01/01/08/120317.html)” Thus, the area covered by the curtain might leave room of imagination for the viewers. Besides, many objects have their metaphoric meaning, which help add a layer of mysteriousness for the painting. For instance, the intertwined lotus pods may imply romantic relationships between man and woman, and grapes are usually used to symbolize fertility (Yifan Shang ‘25)
