Description
In the center of the composition, a person in white sits cross-legged on a traditional Chinese wooden chair and holds a book in his left hand. An ambiguity in gender may be suggested on this figure, because his/her face is covered by the book, and no distinct feature could help distinguish his/her gender. Above this person, there is a bird cage tied to the beam, and a blue bird is in the cage. According to the artist, the creation of “The Imperial Palace” series is inspired by photographs taken in the imperial palace in the late Qing dynasty (http://collection.sina.com.cn/auction/2018-11-12/doc-ihmutuea9424020.shtml).
