Abstract

This paper describes the preparation of several novel platinum(II) complexes. They are dichloro-triethylenetetramine platinum(II), [Pt(trien)Cl21; dichloro-tetraethylenepentamine platinum(II), [Pt (tetrenjC^] , and chloro-tetraethylenepentamine platinumCLI) chloride, [Pt(tetren)Cl]CI, Thermodynamic parameters were determined for the oxidations of these platinum(II) complexes to platinum(IV) by polarographic techniques. These half-wave potentials were interpreted so as to determine the effect of a free chelating group in position to bond at the fifth coordination site during oxidation. An attempt was made to synthesize bipyridyl-cis,cis-l,3>5-triaminocyclohexane platinum(II) chloride; however, these attempts failed due to inability to synthesize the tach ligand. Also, possible evidence for the existence of a Pt(III) intermediate was obtained _2 during the oxidation of the [PtCl^] ion. Results indicate that the free chelating arm has a measurable and relatively substantial effect on the E of the complexes 1/2 examined making the oxidation from Pt(II) to Pt(IV), thermodynamically, more favorable.
