Description
Refraction (2014) is an Installation art by Ai Weiwei. The work is made from solar cookers, kettles, and steel, forming the shape of a giant bird's wing. In this installation work, the reflective metal panels originally used in Tibetan solar cookers are arranged to resemble feathers. Weighing more than five tons, the wing remains on the ground, unable to fly. The work was first exhibited at Alcatraz, a former prison in San Francisco, where visitors could only view it through the windows of a narrow corridor once used by prison guards. Through the image of a heavy, flightless wing, Ai explores the tension between freedom and confinement. (Source: https://artsandculture.google.com/story/OgWR6-s9R4gtKg) (Yida Du '29)
