This photograph is one of Ai Weiwei’s photographic series Provisional Landscapes (2002 - 2008), which documents the changing urban landscapes of China during the rapid urbanization. In this photograph, an area undergoing a large scale demolition is filled with old, destroyed buildings, while modern skyscrapers rise in the background, creating a striking contrast.
