Description
This painting displays Cai's interest in impressionism. Vibrant, contrasting colors come together to present an ordinary bundle of pears extraordinarily. The bumpy texture and subtle green tones of the pears itself may be representing them undesirably, a contrast to the canon of still lives that has preexisted in the history of oil painting. Interestingly, the artist has chosen to paint a bunch of western pears instead of the more common Asian pear that is rounder and yellower. (Nicole Wang '26)
