Description

This is a set of fourteen of Cai's abstracted gunpowder landscapes. The prolific artist had an interest in gunpowder fireworkes in the 1980s. The explosive medium salient to Chinese culture is used by Cai to create visuals that blend technology and violence with natural and floral shapes. The strong contradiction creates a daring but tender presentation. Gunpowder fireworks which are used in Chinese culture for celebration, funerary rites, and violence are reinvented to create landscapes that remind the viewer of snowy footprinted fields, skylines, and fields of flowers.
