Description
After graduation from Central Academy of Fine Arts, the painter endured forced labor in Hebei and later Sichuan as an "educated youth". It was this experience that inspired his interest in painting lonely Tibetan figures, a subject matter that established his oeuvre. "Stranger" is another example of his "Scar Painting", a mixture of portraiture and propaganda type of painting that emerged after the Cultural Revolution. The movement of "Scar Art" aimed to expose the trauma and pain experienced at the time. In the painting, a lonely-looking girl stands in a hilly field empty except for a single shack in the distance. Rays of sunlight glean off the shack and onto the field. (Nicole Wang '26)
