Description
“Fairy Tale” is a project initiated in 2007 in which Ai Weiwei invited 1,001 mainland Chinese citizens to Kassel, Germany, to view and participate in Documenta 12, a highly respected European exhibition of contemporary visual art. For many of the participants, this was their first time traveling abroad. Ai Weiwei photographed each participant, and these images were assembled into a wall of portraits as the project’s final presentation. The title carries a double meaning. On the one hand, Kassel is the birthplace of the Brothers Grimm, who collected and published "Grimm's fairy tale". On the other hand, for participants who had never traveled to another country, the journey to Kassel itself is like a fairy tale. (Zhuocheng Jiang ’26)
