Description
This photograph captures an installation at the Fine Arts School affiliated with the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, China. Wang Peng constructed a brick wall that covered the entrance to the Fine Arts building. At the time, he was still a professor at the Central Academy of Fine Arts. The installation was made in a time of extreme government repression of art, especially avant-garde art, beginning after 1989. Prior to the construction of the wall, an exhibition at the gallery was shut down a day after its opening. In response, Wang placed a brick wall in front of the gallery doorway with a note saying, "Attention: Not Open to Foreigners or Hong Kong/ Taiwan Art Dealers". Soon after the university gallery requested he tear down the wall. Wang complied after three days, the original timeframe set for his installation. Among the viewers of the exhibition were prominent contemporary avant-garde artists like Zhao Bandi, Zhang Huan, Huang Du, and Zhu Ming. (Nicole Wang '26).
