Description
In the “Bloodline: Big Family” series, faces and upper torsos of some figures are depicted in a gray background. The figures, although having stiff expressions or no emotions on their faces, are connected by red bloodlines. These bloodlines are thin and long, appearing on each painting of this series. Zhang uses “introspective soliloquy,” ziwo dubai xing, to define his art and himself. As Dr. Zhou Yan suggests, the artist recollected the inspiration of old family photos in making the ”Bloodline Series”, because a tradition of taking "standard" family photos has started since the 1950s in China, family members would wear uniforms by that time and pose stiffly with little facial expression (Yan Zhou, “A History of Contemporary Chinese Art”, Springer, 2020, pp. 297-299).
