Description
On August 14, 1994, artist Wang and his companions took a train to LinXian, Henan 河南林县, the town where the Red Flag Canal belongs. The following day, on August 14, Wang arrived at the Canal and discarded 25 kilograms of red concentrated mineral powder into the river. Quickly after effects of diffusion, the entire river was dyed in to scarlet red. The "red" Wang employed in this work could work into multiple symbolisms: marriage, felicitation, revolution, and so on. "Wang uses this color to suggest the ways in which something evoking feelings of good fortune might also literally become a pervasive agent of pollution."
