Abstract

This paper analyzes the role that Eastern Orthodoxy played in the Russian Invasion of Ukraine (2022-present). The first chapter looks at the development of Ukrainian nationalism, focusing on the role the Orthodox Church played in Kyivan Rus' and the Dnipro Cossacks. The second chapter discusses the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU) and its history as well as the general structure of Eastern Orthodoxy. The third chapter provides the pre-2023 political histories of twenty-first-century Ukraine and Russia, and the final chapter discusses potential futures for the OCU, Russian Orthodox Church (ROC), and Russian-Ukrainian relations.
