Abstract
After the destruction of her home in an Allied bombing, fifteen-year-old Gabriella Luc, her mother, and her younger sister set out to find Gabriella’s brother and stepfather, who are fighting with the partisans for the liberation of Italy from the Nazis. While they travel, Gabriella tries to rewrite her life story, making it into a fairy tale where she and her three friends play soccer, fall in love, and save the world. But when Gabriella’s father, now a soldier in the Italian army, follows them into the hills, seeking revenge for her mother’s second marriage, Gabriella is forced to accept the truth and confront the real world that she lives in.
