Friend of Mr. A.B. Norton,
Dallas City Texas,
Not forgetting to note that Texas is soon to be a state of immense [?] to the welfare of the Republic and that all who take part in the cause [au] to be held to great responsibility, and having no prejudice against you personally, as an [?] man. I make bold to wish [?]m a Happy New Year. And [?] your happiness secured in the year 1881. I wish you [?] Happy New Year.
The world moves, and everything being favorable. I have no objections the inauguration of an Ohio man to succeed[?] days. As resident of the U.S.
But Norton, I have one thing against you, and this it is, you have [?] of information, to [wit] in [?] notes on and about Philander Chase and Kenyon College— and although [?] for you have done some service, in this you are [?] that you have not [outnuted] those notes to someone for you or for him to print in a book or otherwise, and in a loud voice and with a formidable interest [?] point I ask. When will you put to print Reminisces of Kenyon College??
You ought to have heard the shout of the Philomathesian boys at last Commencement when they opened a long box I brought with me to Gambier— and it revealed to them a full length portrait of Ms. D [?] in a splendid frame. I placed it on their walls— and with it a note from me that I came to the hill a boy of 14. fifty years ago— President Hayes was with us and a group of alumnus was later be[?] to gra[?]. [?] is to say if you[?] [?] loved to browse your notes— Lend them to me— for I admit to love my [?] foundations [?] to old Kenyon.
Your Old Friend
