To Eli Tappan L.L.C.
Very Dear Sir
Yours of the 18th is received; and also the biennial Catalogue of Kenyon College.
I beg to thank you for these Courtesies, and congratulate you for the general accuracy of your statistics. I might perhaps point out, so far as my memory goes, some omissions previous to 1832-3: but none worthy of corrections.
From the very origin of the Institution up to 1832 many persons discharged to Duties of Tutors and even Professors at the Request of Bishop Chase, without formal appointment or confirmation of the Trustees. Rev. Dr. McElroy evidently mistakes Faculty Meetings for those of the Trustees.
These are among the Papers of Bishop Chase, so far as they have fallen into my hands, no Records of Faculty Meetings or those of the Trustees.
Of the Proceedings of the Trustees I know but little: but I was familiar with Faculty Meetings in 1830-31-32 during which time I was Principal of the Grammar School or Preparatory Department: but these I endeavoured to forget, for their [?] [deserve] in the main oblivion.
Again thanking you for your courtesy, such saying I shall be glad to afford you any information in my power
I am
Most Affectionately
Samuel Chase
Ps. John Kendrick was secretary of the Faculty in /30-/31 & I think /32
