Dear Miss

I have no doubt that you were not a little surprised the other day on returning home, in learning that you had been called on by one with whom you have no acquaintance; nor could you be more surprised, than I have been mortified, in consequence of such an impropriety; and therfore[sic] would make an apology, which is this: having understood Mr. Jones that he wawa acquainted with you, and being invited by him to call, for the purpose of ------- I did not hesitate a moment to od so but afterwards learning from what he said, that he was no better acquainted than myself, I leave it to you to judge how I felt, hoping that you will consider this a good excuse on my part at least.

I have no house however, that Mr. J. will say that I was the primary cause of doing so, thus may be the truth in one respect, but I assure you that neither the desire of an acquaintance or any other consideration could have thus induced me had I not been led by the impression that he was an acquaintance of yours.

I am, Dear Miss, most respectfully

Yours &c, Hiram L. White

Post Scriptum

Having thus apologised by giving an explanation for what I supposed had excited you[r] astonishment, it seems impossible to conclude therewith; but you will not be surprised for I shall not presume to express that which prompts me to seek an acquaintance with you but merely the desire of knowing, whither this my design would meet you[sic] approbation or not.And may I not hope that whatever may be your mind, you will inform mw through the medium by which you receive this, or through the Post Office, or any other wat, do not suppose that there would be any impropriety in doing so, or there cirtainly[sic] would be none: And that you my[sic] not hesitate to comply with this request, I will understand your name only, enclosed, as favourable; or a blank letter as your disapprobation.

Yours

H.L.W.
