My dear Sir,
I have been examining the papers in the care of Jd. Hafner. It gives me a good deal of anxiety. I write merely to discharge my duty to the State and also to the individual & his family. I confess myself embarrassed by conflicting considerations arising altogether out of the character of the [press]. It is not quite clear that it was a case of [?] [degree]. It will aid me in my conclusion if I can have a statement from the jury of their views of the evidence [spent] judgment of the case. I must go to Pittsburgh today to return on Monday: when I hope to hear from you.
Would it not be well for you to prepare an article, well considered setting forth the wishes & [?] of the LIberal Germans in relation to the approaching election & candidates. Such an article would enact a fresh influence upon many minds.
Yours truly
S. Chase
