Dear George,
Your letter, 1st date, [25th], is thankfully rec’d have but a moment to spare. I have written S.B. French, in answer of his letter to me, that I cannot enter into any engagements, without further acquaintance & further [means]. You know my [calculations] and that I shall be unable to accomplish my own long deferred purposes, do the best I can. Why then should I undertake new projects?
With much love & esteem
Yours,
