Description

This portfolio is a collection of ten reproduction prints of lithographs by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, accompanied by an introductory essay written by Carl Zigrosser, the Curator of Prints at the Philadelphia Museum of Art at the time of this portfolio’s publication in 1946.

The cover art for this collection features a minstrel performer in blackface. Minstrel performances perpetuated harmful stereotypes, presenting Black people as comedic caricatures and reinforcing racist social hierarchies. Lautrec repeatedly used this minstrel motif. It can be seen in the bottom right corner of May Milton (2025.115.9) and in his Circus series of prints (2025.117.25).
