Description
This print depicts a Black minstrel performer. Minstrel performances perpetuated harmful stereotypes, presenting Black people as comedic caricatures and reinforcing racist social hierarchies. Lautrec repeatedly used this minstrel motif. It can be seen on the cover of this collection of prints (2025.115) and in the bottom right corner of May Milton (2025.115.9).
This print is part of a larger collection (2025.117.1–2025.117.39) whose overarching record can be found here.
