Description

This is an article, titled "Toward New Sculpture," by Zhang Qing, editor of special column, "Issues of Sculpture in China," on "Art Gallery" magazine (issue and year unknow, but should be in the 1990s), about contemporary Chinese sculpture. Starting with the origin of Chinese contemporary sculpture, the article analyzes the characteristics of Chinese academician sculpture and the divergence from Western contemporary art. Then the author concludes the challenges the field faced, such as internationalization, localization, and the impact of installation art and market economy. At the same time the the situation of sculpture in China. seems promising to the author because many young artists are exploring new art language, form and methodologies and expanding the boundary of sculpture. The works Zhan Wang as examples of this phenomenon were discussed. (Zhuocheng Jiang '26)
