Description
Blossom is a work created by Ai Weiwei specifically for the former Alcatraz prison in San Francisco. The installation consists of hundreds of white porcelain flowers, filling the sinks, toilets, and bathtubs in the former prison hospital on Alcatraz island. Like Ai Weiwei's other ceramic works, these porcelain flowers were made by artisans in Jingdezhen, China, using traditional techniques. The work explores the human rights and the contrast between beauty and confinement. Additionally, the work may allude to China's Hundred Flowers Campaign (1956), during which the government shortly encouraged freedom of expression before launching a political criticism and suppression on those who spoke out.
