This painting series depicts a solo child-figure in a state of leisure and self-entertainment. The inclusion of a chair in each portrait enriches the setting and the figure's activity for us. Capturing the children in relaxed, self-sufficient poses, GUO Jin is lamenting the lost naïveté of adults by portraying an innocent contrary of a child. The muted background of the portraits may be GUO Jin's intention to separate the innocent, idealistic children from the chaotic reality, but to leave them in a secluded -- unattainable -- bubble of ideal.
