Description

Middle Finger is a gilt bronze sculpture created by Ai Weiwei in 2000. This work depicts part of a human head, shoulder, and an outstretched arm with its middle finger raised facing front. This middle finger motif appears in many of Ai Weiwei’s works, beginning with his famous Study of Perspective series (1995 - 2011). In that series, Ai directed his middle finger toward politically and culturally significant landmarks around the world. By transforming this gesture into a sculpture, Ai further emphasizes the relationship between individual expression and power. A white marble version of this middle finger sculpture, titled Marble Arm (2007), is also included in the Additional Files section below.
