Description

From left to right, each scroll is called "Green Dragon (East)," "White Tiger (West)," "Vermillion Phoenix (South)," "Black Tortoise, and Snake (North)." In this series, the artist avoids outlining the mythical creature's appearance. The work adopts a vertical composition with the main forms concentrated in the center and gradually building upward. She employed traditional ink-painting techniques, such as washes, diffusion, and negative space, to create abstract forms of these creatures. Through control of the shade of ink and blurred edges, she makes the figures emerge from the picture. Viewers can see the creatures’ torsos and bodily contours through the light ink. These bodies overlap with rock, producing a visible field of vital energy and opening up spaces for the viewer’s interpretation and imagination. (Angela Tan 28’)
