Description
The artist has painted the bottom of a couch with red, black, and white ink. Furthermore, Hou has divided the surface into individually painted sections, which appear to depict different but related scenes. The painting style is expressive and abstract. Some brushstrokes appear to be purposely smeared or smudged, giving the piece an erratic energy. Yet upon closer look, the viewer can make out motifs of hands and triangles as well as figures hidden among shadows. The sharp borders of each painted section contrast against the chaos that they display. Overall. the red paint, aggressively applied brushwork, and abstracted figures suggests a tone of violence, secrecy, and trauma.
