Description

"Apple" is an installation created from 1988 to 1993, a continuation of experiments on sculpture after he emigrated to Austria due to participating in the Tiananmen Square movement in 1989. This hollow apple is constructed of coins glued together. For the reason of choosing coins as the material, he intended to reveal the fact that in the realm of western art and the post-modern society's there is contradiction between its gilded surface and hollow connotation, which people avoid discussing. According to his statement, he did not mean to simply criticize money worship but delve into the innate power of money and how it as an instrument spread the power to every corner of the society.
