Description

An image of Andrew Solomon, a New York-based writer who wrote on Chinese contemporary art in the 1990s (See Yan ZHOU, "A History of Contemporary Chinese Art: 1949 to Present," 2020, Springer, p.283), rowing on a boat which is inscribed “The New York Times Magazine” is painted on the paper. At the right side of the work, the artist writes “The great Mr. Solomon came to distant China and made very sharp observations about the mind of the people in this remote country.” According to the artist, this work implies that China is marginalized and is considered far away from the center of the world art (Lecture by Zhou Tiehai - Placebo-Swiss at Hara Museum, https://shanghartgallery.com/texts/zhoutiehai5.htm).
