Description

This action occurred immediately after the Zhang and East Village collaborators completed the action "To Add One Meter to an Anonymous Mountain". Kong Bu, who aided in the preparation of "To Add One Meter to an Anonymous Mountain", describes in his article "Zhang Huan in Beijing" (2007) that "Nine Holes" was realized when the nine artists traveled to a different nearby peak on the unknown mountain and laid face down on its surface. The male artists dug holes underneath them and stuck their penises inside. Similarly, the female artists aligned their vaginas to holes in the dirt. In the background, a mountain range can be seen, Next to it is a body of water. The background also includes human intervention -- a road intercepts the mountains and the bottom left corner shows a sliver of apartment complexes. According to Kong Bu, the action was a beautiful representation of the relationship between man and nature.
