Action Art

Group/Movement

East Village (Beijing) artist.

Description

In this action art, Zhang collaborated with nine other artists from the Beijing East Village, an artist community named after the East Village in Manhattan. Together they climbed the peak of Miaofengshan mountain. There they stripped naked one by one and piled on top of each other in order of heaviest to lightest. Kong Bu, friend of the artist and collaborator, was responsible for measuring the weight of each East Village participant. The mountain increased in height from 86.393 meters to 87.393 meters. The action lasted a little over an hour. See Yan Zhou, "A History of Contemporary Chinese Art: 1949 to Present," pp. 311-312. For addition reading on this action, reading Kong Bu's article "Zhang Huan in Beijing" (2007): http://www.zhanghuan.com/wzMF/info_74.aspx (Nicole Wang '26).
