Description
This work depicts a young man, perhaps the artist himself, walking along a dry, gravelly path, likely located in a desert in northwest China. He is wearing everyday clothes and a heavy backpack. The title references summertime, but the imagery of an aggressively dry, hot, and desolate desert area may subvert the viewer's expectation of a lush, playful, and warm summer season. The visually empty and harsh imagery also contrasts common interpretations of the silk roads as symbols of wealth, knowledge, and globalization.
