Description
This work is composed of a wooden table and numerous chairs from the the five continents, simulating a protocol of conference. This simulation referenced on both the "gathering dinner" from Chinese convention and the "round table conference" from that of the west. On (or in) that table, the inlayed chairs representative of the continents symbolize the unison and co-existence of different people and cultures. However, the inlayed nature of these chairs also serve to highlight the impossibility of (complete) communication among the nations and the authority and power taken by some parties. In the center of the table inscribed some concerning issues discussed by the United Nations, as to suggest the shared thoughts across nations. "Co-existence doesn't mean equality; communication does not necessarily solve problems" -- are two themes CHEN Zhen wishes to explore in this work (Chen, Proposal of the "Round Table", 1995, available on Zhou Documents under the artist CHEN Zhen). (Jerry Wu'23).
