Abstract
Political science conventionally theorizes that debates do not change the margins of victory in elections (e.g. Erikson and Wlezien 2012), yet from a sociological standpoint we recognize that debate performance has notable significance culturally. To better understand debates' cultural impact during a time of political polarization, we studied the first set of midterms following January 6th. We focused on eight swing states during this election cycle: Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, New Hampshire, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
