Abstract
This summer, I interned at the Office of Mental Health within the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) via the internship track of the Sociolegal Summer Scholars Program. I worked at the intersection of mental health equity and public safety reform by bridging the CDPH’s access to trauma-informed, mental healthcare in the Youth Intervention Pathways (YIP) program. The CDPH leverages historic investments in mental health through various initiatives that operate direct services and fund mental health service expansion. One of these initiatives is the Trauma-Informed Centers of Care (TICC) Network, which provides mental health services that are trauma-informed, integrative, and available regardless of ability to pay. Through the Youth Intervention Pathways program, the Department of Family and Support Services (DFSS) Youth Services Division works to build pathways for youth 10-17 years old who have had contact with law enforcement to reduce the overrepresentation of youth of color in the juvenile court system. For my concluding internship project, I organized a Connection Convening between DFSS Youth Intervention Pathways (YIP) partners and CDPH Trauma-Informed Centers of Care (TICC) Mental Health Providers to activate mental health resources, expand service connections, and build a network of holistic supports for justice-involved youth.
