Abstract
We explored the content of mock jurors’ deliberation statements about a case involving an adolescent who was coerced to falsely confess. Participants (N=140) read a mock trial depicting either a 14-year-old or 18-year-old male defendant charged with aggravated robbery and felony murder, rendered verdicts, and shared explanations for their verdicts with ostensible fellow jurors. Mock jurors were just as likely to convict a 14-year-old defendant as they were to convict an 18-year-old defendant. Yet, mock jurors made more mitigating statements and uncontrollable attributions about the 14-year-old than the 18-year-old, which in turn, predicted diminished guilty verdicts.
