Description

Statue of Master Mateo (small, perhaps 3 feet tall), on the back of the base of the trumeau of his Portico de la Gloria. Known as the ""santo dos Croques,"" the face and head have been blackened over the centuries by thousands (pilgrims and others) who have bumped their heads against his. 12th century, Romanesque. Santiago de Compostela, Galicia, Spain.
