Description
Apse and roof of La Lanzada Hermitage, Spain.ote the carved corbels/modillions and the skull and cross bones (symbolizing the old Adam) surmounted by the cross (the new Adam of Christ). Romanesque style, but built well into the Gothic period. The small, undistinguished structure has long been (and still is) a goal of ""romerias,"" a combination of pilgrimage and picnic. It is located in a superb location on a point extending into the Atlantic that had been fortified since Roman times. Unfortunately, its exposed position has subjected the building to considerable erosion.
