My dear Dr.
I returned on Monday from a visitation + recd your letter of Sept. 23rd containing your formal resignation. I receive it with great affection for you + much regret that our near relations which have so long sustained + so agreeably are soon to terminate. May the gracious Lord be your stay + peace in the rest of your days, + unite us together at last in the Communion of his people on high.
I have officially notified Dr. [Tyson] of your resignation + requested the nomination of a successor. With affectionate remembrance to Mr. [S] from Mr. [?] + myself, I remain
