Feb. 27, 1864
My dear Mr. Chase-
I see that a new set of [brands] is to be [fired]. 5 400. If you shall have any agency to appoint in Cinc. for their sale, let me ask you to appoint my son in law, John [H?] Hewson[?] a Banker in Cinc. of the highest character for business, intelligence, ability + diligence, [?] being a conscientious Christian man of the highest type of honour + integrity. Jay Cook made him one of his agents for the five [W?s] Will the [?] be 5 or 6 percent.
