BAPTIZED
Under Chilly Waters Of The Kokosing RIver
Sixteen Colored People Received Into Church, Sunday
Nearly 400 people gathered at the West High street bridge Sunday afternoon to witness the unusual spectacle of a public baptism of colored people in the waters of the Kokosing. The ceremony was performed by Elder Grayson of the Calvary Baptist Church. Intrepidly, he waded out into the river until the water was up to his shoulders and there received the various postulants. There were 16 in all, 8 of each sex. All were submerged completely and the icy waters caused two of the women to faint. They were bundled into carriages after the ceremonies and hastily driven to their homes, as were the others who were not thus affected. There will be another baptismal ceremony on April 18, at which time five more people will be submerged. Several of these latter were in attendance Sunday, but decided to wait until warmer weather.
