Drawings are scale renderings of relations among soils, artifacts, features, and architecture revealed in excavations or as seen on modern ground surface. The primary kinds of drawings found in the collection are:
Sections: Depictions of cuts made through buildings or series of earth layers during excavations that show the horizontal and vertical relations among strata, constructions, and features. These are usually drawn at a scale of 1cm:20cm.
Elevations: Face-on renderings of architectural elements, primarily walls, showing the horizontal and vertical relations among their components, usually rocks. These are drawn at scales of 1cm:10cm and 1cm:20cm; check the drawings to see what scale is used in each case.
Excavation Plans: Top-down views of architectural elements revealed in excavations in which the constructions are depicted schematically, i.e., as lines. These drawings demonstrate the horizontal relations among constructions and features. They are drawn at a scale of 1cm:100cm. These are also called Excavation Maps.
Detailed Architectural Plans: Top-down views of architectural elements exposed in excavations, showing the horizontal relations among individual rocks comprising distinct construction units. They are drawn at a scale of 1cm:10cm.
Detailed Feature Plans: Top-down views of relations among materials revealed in excavations, drawn at a scale of 1cm:10cm. They are frequently depictions of burials and in situ artifact scatters.
Site Maps: Top-down renderings showing the horizontal relations among buildings and features at a site as these appeared on ground surface, that is, without excavations. Maps are drawn at scales of 1cm:1000cm or 1cm:500cm; check the drawing to determine which scale was used in each case. Site maps were not modified to include elements revealed during excavations.
Sketch Plans: These are not drawn to scale but are intended to show relations among such elements as architectural features, Suboperations, and excavation units and lots. A particular subset of this genre is the Excavation Unit Plan that shows the horizontal relations among the (usually) 1m2 pits that comprise the Suboperations dug at a particular locale.
