Sir,
With your request to write I cheerfully comply. Some apology may be necessary perhaps for delaying this long— but I have none to offer except that studies and society duties have so fully occupied my time that not until the present has circumstances permitted to write.
Inquiry has been made relative to your debt with the soc — the furniture you left in care of Mr. Taylor has been disposed of by him. The avails thereof exceed your debt with the soc. By the sain of 50 cents not including price of diploma. There is therefore only 25 cents due for diploma. This shall be paid and the diploma I will bring with me when I return in the spring - or should I go home on Christmas as I possibly may I will bring it then and leave it your father.
I supposed you would like to hear what news the hill affords if news it may be called. When home you recollect mention was made of the low condition of the N.P.K. soc - of measures being taken by our soc to assist it [?]. Accordingly a number of our members (ten) have volunteered into the N.P.K. soc for one year. Their names are Johnson and [Fagg] of Theol. Sem. Trowbridge, Allen and Case of Sen. Class. Comstock, Mason and Lamb of Jun. Class. Hedges and a Mr Cowles of Sophomore making in all 16 members of N.P.K. soc. In this act the Philom soc has done itself honor by its noble generosity. By this act the Philom. Soc has sacrificed three of its best members (Johnson, Trowbridge, Fagg) to the interest of a sister soc. But although it be this there remains that same generous and enterprising spirit which has ever characterized the Philom soc and which it is hoped is possessed of every one who has been or is a member thereof.
Think not then that we are on the decline because some from our number is gone. I tell you may but think rather it incites us the more with a spirit of generous ambition to excel. Here follows a list of the names of your classmates who graduate the ensuing commencement. Allen, Calhoun, Dewalt, I.D. French, W. French, Graham, Hale, Long, [L]aine, Trowbridge.
Case is also a sen as your noticed in reading the names of those who volunteered - He has applied himself so closely during his Soph. year that in connection with the studies of that year he carried on the studies of the Jun. and was admitted a member in full of the Sen Class at the beginning of the present term.
If convenient please answer this. If consistent with your feelings and not encroaching on your time I would beg the privilege of an occasional correspondence with you.
Yours respectfully
C.F. Lewis
